In 1962, in parallel with last year studies in High School, he started working as a technician in the Research Institute N17 in Moscow . In 1963 he became a student of Moscow Institute of Physics and Technology. He graduated from the faculty of molecular and chemical physics at MPTI in 1968 with the qualification of theorist on plasma physics. During this period he studied plasma physics under the supervision of D.D.Ryutov in the laboratory of L.I.Rudakov at Kurchatov Institute of Atomic Energy. In 1968, together with D.D.Ryutov, he left Moscow for Novosibirsk, where he took a post-graduate position in the laboratory of R.Z.Sagdeev at the Institute of Nuclear Physics (INP). In 1971 he obtained the official degree of Candidate of Physical and Mathematical Sciences (Ph.D.). His candidate thesis was entitled "Ohmic Resistance and Skin Effect in Inhomogeneous Plasmas". From 1972 to 1986, he held the position of Senior Scientist at the Institute of Nuclear Physics, working in the fusion plasmas laboratory headed by D.D. Ryutov. Together with Ryutov, he developed theory for multiple mirror plasma confinement (1972-78). The results of this theory were experimentally checked at INP and at the University of California, Berkeley ( by A.J.Lichtenberg ). The multiple mirror became a main part of the INP fusion program based on the confinement of the dense plasma heated by high current relativistic electron beam. Later (1979-86), together with Ryutov, he developed theory for the gas dynamic trap, based on new ideas for dense plasma mirror confinement and stabilization of MHD flute modes in axisymmetric systems. These results were investigated in a joint US-USSR experimental collaboration, which was headed, on the US side, by A.Molvik of LLNL. This theory became the basis for the INP program to create a 14 MeV neutron generator for material testing of the elements of the nuclear fusion reactor. The program is under realization now in Joint BINP- Russian Federal Nuclear Center ITP(Chelyabinsk) - Efremov Institute (St. Petersburg ) Project "Hydrogen Prototype". In 1986, he obtained the official degree of Doctor of Physical and Mathematical Sciences. His doctoral thesis was entitled "Theory of Open Traps with Short Mean Free Path". Since 1986, he has held the position of Leading Scientist at the Institute of Nuclear Physics. In 1992 V.V.Mirnov became an elect member of the Institute Scientific Council. During the last several years, he has been working on the theory of ballooning and "fire hose" MHD modes, equilibrium and stability of neutral beam injected plasmas. In 1992, he was granted by a Soros Foundation Grant awarded by the American Physical Society. V.V. Mirnov has published 60 scientific papers. He is the author of two review monographs on the physics of gas dynamic traps and multiple mirror plasma confinement. He has twice visited the United States for collaborative work: at the Institute for Fusion Studies of the University of Texas (in 1984) and at the University of California, Berkeley (in 1990). He has also been a participant in many international conferences - most recently as an invited speaker at the International Conference "Open Systems-93", Novosibirsk (1993), at the 11th International Conference on High Power Particle Beams, BEAMS'96, Prague (1996), at the 38th Meeting of the Division of Plasma Physics of the American Physical Society, Denver, (1996) In addition to his scientific research, for more than twenty five years he has taught part-time at Novosibirsk State University. During this period he has taught classes on almost all branches of general and theoretical physics. Specifically, he has lectured on plasma physics, analytical mechanics, electrodynamics, optics, thermodynamics, statistical physics and hydrodynamics and has taught tutorial seminars on quantum physics. Twice he has been a Chair of the Entrance Examination Commission on Physics. In 1990 he received the official USSR title of the Professor of Theoretical Physics. Since September 1993 he has been a visiting professor in the Department of Physics at the Middle East Technical University (Ankara, Turkey). During 1993-96 academic years he delivered several undergraduate courses ( Statistical Mechanics, Electron Optics, Ideal MHD , Introduction to Plasma Physics) and graduate course of Plasma Physics. He has supervised two MS students and is working now as a Scientific Coordinator on the Joint METU-BINP Project "Plasma-based 14-MeV neutron generator". 1) Gülay Öke (Yalçin) " Transistor Characteristics" for the Dipl.
